Elements Of Bullying...Malign and Non-Malign??

Let me define first what Malign and Non-Malign bullying refers to...

Malign Bullying
It means bullying that consciously seeks to do harm to someone.

7 Elements of Malign Bullying..

1) An initial desire to hurt
2) The desire is then expressed in action
3) Someone is hurt
4) Directed by a more powerful person or group against someone less powerful
5) It is withour justification
6) Typically repeated
7) With evident enjoyment

Non-Malign Bullying
Unintentionally, but the hurt that is experienced may hurt just as much.
The two kinds of non-malign bullying are :-

1) Mindless Bullying

These bullies are not full of malice and may not appear to be hostile at all.
Typically this bully does not know the harm he or she is doing. The bullying is maintained less by evil will of the bully with a vague desire to be part of a bit of fun.

2) Educational Bullying

To find fault after fault, straightening out the kinks in a student's logical thinking for instance, and exposing the limitations of his or her conceptualisations. This, we call as an intellectual bully which is an occupational hazard for any teacher. Criticism and engaging in a ruthless and insensitive exposure of the limitations of someone can make someone feel inferior. This can be destructive for the person and can break the person's spirit with the best of intentions.

You may have not thought that this could even be categorized as bullying..Even for me, it was something new and refreshing. There will be more to come!

  1. I like to expand on the educational bullying bit. While nitpicking, which is the act of finding and pointing out faults about someone's work, may be categorized as non-malign bullying, it does not mean it cannot be considered malign bullying too.

You can nitpick with the intention to hurt. Lets say, one of your classmate has just finished his assignment. You, wanting to be a jerk to him, point out, non-constructively, all the smallest fault he did and make him feel like an idiot.
"You're so stupid you don't even know how to use UKM's style! Go back to secondary school la!"

    See? Bullying, albeit psychologically.

    (P/s: guys, start discussing.)

  2. I would like to add a little bit information about malign and non-maligh bullying.

As we all know, not all bullying is carried out intentionally to threaten someone. In other words, not all bullying is malign. For example, a child may at times be unaware that what he or she is doing is distressing to another child. This is more likely to accur in the heat of the moment. The child needs to become aware of the consequences of such actions. In this case, the conscious aim is to hurt or intimidate. If the bullying is non-malign, the bullying will stop when the child appreciates the hurtfulness of his actions.
