  1. what they did in army forces (bullying to increase endurance)is quite similar with the feedback from one of the ukmkl courses, they bully just to enhance the junior capability to endure the stress etc in the future.

quite agree with this point, but does it really that necessary to do all these? or just that it was due to personal reason for them to do to amuse themselves?

  2. Bullying is, first and foremost, to exert control to a weaker individual. Either from a senior to a junior or from a drill sergeant to a recruit, it's the same although the intention may be different.

For the military, it may well be to toughen them up. But then you hear a case where the recruits were severely beaten up during boot camp. I fail to see how hospitalizing 19 year old recruits is a viable method of 'toughening up'.

As for 'enhancing the junior capability to endure future stress', that, I think, reeks of lame excuse. It is impossible they did it without a little bit of schadenfreude. Is it necessary? Of course not.

  3. in my perspective of view, of course its a lame excuse in order to rationalize their behavior, probably they are the one who stressed and need to release tension in such a way.

however, in military as well, indeed the 'toughen up' process is important in the training, but i had seen the senior army slapping the junior happily. meaning that the senior enjoy doing it.

anyway, its just my point of view, there are still many effective methods to increase personal capability to cope with stress situation, but why we still stick with the hard way?

  4. Din: I've heard about that story. I think there should be another ways to develop the respect for others. Briefly, respect can come when we respect the others. So, why must they use the annoying lesson to create the respect among juniors. Just like an uneducated and immoral person.

  5. Chia: you said that they bully just to enhance the junior capability to endure the stress etc in the future. I think it's just an excuse since nowadays, there are too many modules that can be used to manage stress.
